Britain finish rowing season strongly in Amsterdam

<![CDATA[The closing day of the World Rowing Championships on Sunday rounded off a hugely successful week for Britain, as the men’s eight defended their title in dramatic fashion.

The octet staved off a resilient Germany to win by just 0.6 seconds, having led the way from the 1,000 metre mark. And the victory was particularly impressive as the crew featured five changes to the one that won in South Korea only last year.

Saturday saw Olympic champions Heather Stanning and Helen Glover take gold in the women’s pair, while also setting a new world record time of six minutes 50.61 seconds.

There was further British interest in the men’s lightweight four and women’s eight finals, which yielded a bronze medal and sixth-place finish respectively.

Only New Zealand managed more gold medals (6) than Great Britain’s haul of four, but the latter secured the most medals overall – including four silvers and two bronze. This tally marks an improvement on that achieved in 2013, which saw eight won in total.
