When chemicals and toxins settle at the bottom of water, pumps are often used to remove these. This process essentially separates potentially harmful sludge from the water, together with all residues, before being moved to a landfill site or similar space. Excavation is the primary method by which land remediation is carried out, with dangerous materials dug up out of the soil before being replaced by clean earth.
