GB Rowing Team leave Amsterdam with impressive 13-medal haul

Two weeks ago, the national press were lauding the performance of Great Britain’s Olympic rowers following their heroics in Rio. But before the closing ceremony in Brazil could even begin, a 113-person squad was already preparing for their next challenge – the 2016 World Rowing Championships in Rotterdam, Netherlands.

The 46^th edition of the annual week-long regatta began on August 21, with the senior programme held at the same time as the World Rowing Junior Championships and World Rowing U23 Championships.

Just as they did in France last year, the senior squad topped the medal chants once again with golds in the Men’s Coxed Pair, Women’s Four and Lightweight Women’s Quadruple Sculls. There was also bronze for Joel Cassells and Sam Scrimgeour in the Lightweight Men’s Pair, completing the senior GB Rowing Team’s tally of four podium finishes.

The final day of the competition also saw the Juniors win two silver medals and a bronze, providing a fitting climax to an excellent week for British rowing and sport in general.

This dramatic conclusion meant the GB Rowing Team returned to these shores with a total of 13 medals (five gold, five silver and three bronze) – a fantastic achievement given that this year’s competition was restricted to non-Olympic events.
